The top court of the European Union has stated that Uber should be classified as a transport service, allowing it to be regulated like other taxi operators.
Uber argues that it is just an app that connects drivers with passengers and should thus be subject to lighter European Union (EU) rules for online services. However, the court argues that Uber’s services are covered by services in the field of transport.
With this ruling, members of the EU will be able to regulate the conditions for Uber operating in their countries. This will be seen as a great victory for taxi drivers as they have viewed Uber as unfair competition due to less regulation.
