It has been discovered that Uber had paid off hackers to hide a massive data breach in 2016 that compromised the personal information of millions of Uber users.

It was revealed that the hackers were able to download the information of 600,000 drivers including driver’s license numbers and names as well as the personal information of 57 million Uber users.

It is reported that Uber paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the data and keep quiet about the security breach.

Uber Improves The UberPOOL Experience

As part of Uber’s 180 days of change, Uber has updated UberPOOL so that is more attractive for drivers.

  • Pickup fares – You will now earn an extra flat fare for every additional pickup you have during your UberPOOL trip. After dropping off the final rider, you will see the total pickup fare that you have earned.
  • Education for new UberPOOL riders – Riders using UberPOOL for the first time will now be educated on what they will experience during their trip. They will receive tips on how to be a great POOL rider as well. After their trip is over, they will receive an email for additional education on UberPOOL.
  • Arrival time reminders for riders – POOL riders will now receive notifications reminding them when you will be arriving as well as being able to see your location. This allows them to be better prepared for your arrival.
  • Straighter routes – Routing has been updated so that unnecessary turns are more likely to be eliminated, offering you a more straightforward route. This provides less stress and can save you gas.
  • Suggested pickup and dropoff locations for riders – The Uber app will suggest pickup and dropoff locations for riders. If they accept, the route will be adjusted automatically.
  • Safer pickup and dropoff locations for riders – If the Uber app detects that a rider is requesting a pickup or dropoff in a restricted area, the pickup or dropoff location will be moved to a safer spot.
  • End-of-trip-ratings for all riders – After you drop off your last POOL rider, you will be able to rate every rider at once from the same screen. Just make any adjustments you need and swipe to complete the ratings.

Uber Adds New Sources Of Income

As part of Uber’s 180 days of change, Uber has included a couple of new sources of income without you needing to change anything.

  • Long pickup fees – If your pickup location takes longer than a certain amount of time to get to, you will start to receive extra income up to a maximum of $20. This will only apply to UberX and UberPOOL trips. They are not affected by Surge or Boost and will not apply to Driver Destination trips. You will not be able to cheat the system as it will detect whether you are making reasonable progress to your pickup location.
  • Better late cancellation fees – If a rider cancels more than 2 minutes after you’ve accepted their trip, you’ll be paid the higher amount between the standard cancellation fee or the actual time and distance you spent driving towards their pickup location.

Uber Updates The Ratings System

As part of Uber’s 180 days of change, Uber has improved the ratings system to give you more protection and clearer feedback.

  • Updates to the star rating system for riders – If a rider selects a rating under 5 stars, they will be able to select options stating common problems they might have had an issue with the ride such as the driving experience, comfort, the driver, etc. This allows Uber to know more specifically what the problem was. This feedback will appear in the Rider Feedback section of your Ratings tab.
  • More confident feedback – Riders won’t see their updated rating until after they’ve rated you, allowing you to provide feedback with more confidence.
  • More ratings from riders – Riders will be reminded before their next trip to rate the previous trip.
  • Ratings protection – If a rider rates you below 5 stars, reasons outside of your control will not affect your driver rating. Additionally, riders who constantly give low ratings will not be included in your driver rating.

Uber Updates The Pickup Experience

As part of Uber’s 180 days of change, Uber has made some improvements to the pickup experience.

  • You can now see your rider’s location live – If the rider chooses to share their GPS location, you will be able to see exactly where they are on your app.
  • Guest pickups – Riders can now request an Uber for guests who do not have the Uber app. The rider will enter in the information of any guest who will need to be picked up and the guests will get an SMS containing your information as well.
  • Reminders for riders – Riders will be notified that you are waiting for them if you have been waiting at the pickup location for longer than 1 minute.
  • Scheduled advance trips – If a rider has scheduled a trip in advance, you will now see it on the request screen.

Four Different Ways To Get Help From Uber

  1. In-app support – Using the support feature in your app is the first and easiest thing that you can do. A lot of the common problems you may have are listed here and the answers or further information can be found here.
  2. Uber Greenlight locations – If you want to chat with someone in person, going to an Uber Greenlight location is the best way to do so. There are 2 types of Greenlight locations, hubs and spots. Greenlight spots are meant for newer Uber drivers and provide help for beginner questions, such as how the activation process works.
  3. Uber Web support at help.uber.com – Very similar to in-app support, but viewable on any internet browser whether on your phone or computer. Again, many common problems will be listed here for you to click and find answers for or further information.
  4. Localized Web support at uber.com/drive – Your city may have a help site tailored for the city you drive in. Hover over the DRIVE tab at the top of the screen and click LOCAL DRIVER GUIDE. Your localized help site will provide you with answers to a variety of topics as well as news that affects your area.

Does Your Uber Driver Rating Matter?

As an Uber driver, your driver rating is extremely important because your account will be deactivated if it drops below a certain amount.

If your rating drops below 4.6/5.0, Uber will deactivate your account. Fortunately, this is not a permanent situation if you want to continue to drive for Uber. If you want to continue driving for Uber despite them deactivating your account, you are allowed to take courses to get your driver rating back up. Can I Have A Friend Ride Along While I Drive For Uber?

What Should You Do If Someone Vomits In Your Uber Car?

It is highly likely that you will deal with a drunk passenger at least once in your Uber career. This can be an unpleasant situation for both people. Here’s how to handle the situation.

  1. Rate the passenger as 1 star. This will flag the trip and allow you to explain the reasoning for the rating.
